Neck pain in Gladstone

Neck pain is one of the most common problems we see, and most cases settle well with the right approach. In Gladstone a lot of it is tied to work: long hours driving, overhead work on site, screens and control rooms, and shift rosters that cut into sleep. Neck pain often comes with headaches or pain into the shoulder blade.

Common causes

  • Muscle and joint strain from sustained postures, such as driving, screens or overhead work
  • Stiffness through the neck and upper back
  • Whiplash after a car accident
  • Nerve-related pain that travels into the arm
  • Headaches that start from the neck

What an assessment involves

We take your history, look at how your neck and upper back move, test strength and nerve function where needed, and screen for anything that needs a doctor. The aim is to find what is driving the pain, not just where it is felt.

How it is treated

Treatment follows what the assessment finds. It commonly combines hands-on treatment to ease pain and restore movement, a graded exercise program for the neck and shoulders, and practical changes to how you set up for work, driving and sleep. Dry needling is available where it suits the problem.

When to seek urgent medical attention

See a doctor promptly if neck pain follows a significant fall or accident, or comes with any of: severe or worsening headache unlike your usual, dizziness, double vision, difficulty speaking or swallowing, weakness or clumsiness in the arms or legs, loss of balance, fever, or unexplained weight loss. If symptoms are sudden and severe, call 000.

Funding options

We work with NDIS participants who are plan-managed or self-managed, DVA cardholders, WorkCover Queensland claims, and Medicare Chronic Condition Management plan referrals — and we bulk bill every CDM appointment, so there is no out-of-pocket cost. HICAPS is available on site for private health fund claiming. We also treat motor vehicle accident (CTP) claims.

Common questions

Do I need a scan for neck pain?

Usually not. Scans rarely change the treatment, and a physio assessment will identify the cases where one is warranted.

Should I use a special pillow?

There is no single best pillow. What matters is a position that keeps your neck comfortable through the night. We will talk through what suits you.

Can you help with whiplash after a car accident?

Yes. We treat whiplash, including under CTP claims. Bring your claim number if you have one.

Can neck pain cause headaches?

Yes. Some headaches start in the neck, and we assess for this.
